In the opening chapters of 2 Samuel we see David being established as the king of Israel.  In chapter 5:13 it says “After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem.”  God’s principle had not changed, “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”  One man, one woman, joined in marriage to become one flesh.

David’s compromise in having many wives had drastic effects.  His first wife, Michal, despised him when she saw him shamelessly worship the Lord (Chapter 6).  He married Abigail, a woman of grace and wisdom (1 Samuel 25).  Then he married Ahinoam and more wives and concubines.

One night, from the roof of his palace, he saw Bathsheba bathing.  Not surprisingly he noticed she was beautiful.  This led him to inquire who she was as he was drawn deeper into temptation’s grip.  As king he requested that she come to him, even though he knew she was Uriah’s wife.  He couldn’t resist, committed adultery, and sent her home.  Her pregnancy created a crisis.  As he tried to work things out they only got more complicated.  Finally, he had Uriah killed in battle. Then he married Bathsheba.

The tragic consequences of David’s sin are hard to comprehend.  He was forgiven when he confessed his sin, but the unintended consequences remained to haunt him.  Sin always leaves its scars, even when forgiven.

God knows what was best for man in the area of romance, sex and marriage. Never tamper with nor disregard His design.
