As I was reading Joshua chapter 24 I came across an impact statement.  Joshua challenges the children of Israel to choose for themselves whom they were going to serve.  Then he made this statement in verse 15, “But as for me and my household we will serve the Lord.”

That’s an impact statement.  When you read it, it’s almost indelibly written on your mind without even trying to memorize it.  “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

As a parent ask yourself: what kind of person do you want your children to be as adults?  Then ask, am I that kind of person as a parent?  We should never expect more of our children than we experience ourselves.

Similarly, we should never expect of those we lead what we don’t expect of ourselves.  To train a child in the way he should go means you have an idea of what that objective is and you’re seeking to exemplify it in your own walk.

Most would agree with the poet, Edgar A. Guest, “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day.  I’d rather one would walk with me than merely show the way.  I can soon learn how to do it if you’ll let me see it done.  I can watch your hands in action but your tongue too fast may run.  The lectures you deliver may be very wise and true, but I’d rather learn my lesson by observing what you do.  For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give, but there is no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.”

Ask God to make your life an example for others to follow.
