Genesis 18 affords us the opportunity to do a chapter study.  I felt a fitting title for this chapter would be: Serving others has unexpected rewards.  The key verse is verse 14: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”  The significant truth is: You can never out give or out serve the Lord.  Some cross references I found helpful were Hebrews 13:2 regarding hospitality to strangers, and 2nd Peter 2:6-10 regarding judgment and deliverance.  I questioned whether Abraham and Sarah had faith at this time regarding God’s promise of a son.  Also, should the unrighteous be spared if a few righteous are living among them?

This is how I outlined the chapter:  Title: Serving Others has Unexpected Rewards.                                                                         1. The unexpected rewards of hospitality                                                                                                                                                                    a. some entertain angels unawares                                                                                                                                                                 b. guests often give more than they receive.                                                                                                                                    2. The unexpected answers to prayer                                                                                                                                                                         a. God often answers requests we didn’t ask for.                                                                                                                            3. The unexpected revelations of God’s character                                                                                                                                                   a. God is patient                                                                                                                                                                                                   b. God is gracious                                                                                                                                                                                                c. God is faithful                                                                                                                                                                                                    d. God is just.

Reflect on the outline and see if it captures what is stated in the chapter.  If something is missed, try to find out where it fits.  Putting it into outline form helps you remember the material for yourself as well as for sharing it clearly with others.  The final step in doing a chapter study is develop applications you can make to your own life based on your study.
