If you feel like we’re living in the last days you are right. 1st Peter 4:7 says, “The end of all things is near.” And this was written almost two millennia ago. Jesus said in John 9:4, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” But how do we determine what we are to do? Peter gives us guidance in verses 7-11. Some things all of us can do. He says in verse 7, “be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.” All of us can pray, but most of us have such cluttered minds that it’s hard to focus on things to pray about. That’s why Jesus taught us to pray in our closets, so we won’t be distracted. Actually, some of us probably would be distracted by the abundance of clothes and shoes in our closets. What Jesus was saying is get alone with Him and first ask Him what or who He’s concerned about. Wait in quietness until your mind focuses on something, then stop and think about what or who it is. Focus on what you already know and gradually you can develop a prayer request that is specific. As you pray you’ll likely think of action steps you can take to possibly be part of the answer to your prayer. For example, if you have been maligned, pray for them and forgive them. Then pray about what you could do to show love for that person. A further step would be to offer hospitality to them without grumbling. Make room in your heart and home to bless them. These are simple, life changing steps all of us can do.
