In our last visit we saw that Peter identified Christians first as babies who need to grow, and then indicated they are like living stones reflecting some characteristics of the living stone, Jesus Christ. Peter added in 1st Peter 2:5 Christians are a holy priesthood and continues in verses 9 and 10, “you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.” In spite of these privileged titles and descriptions of what we are, we’re also identified as “aliens and strangers” in this world. Consequently we live with a certain amount of tension, and at times opposition and even persecution. Peter, however, declares, we are “free men,” and “servants of God” (verse 16). Though we were like sheep going astray, once we returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls, we found we are not alone on our journey. Since this is who we are, let’s now see what Peter says about what we should be and how we should order our lives. He says, now that you have tasted that that the Lord is good, as babies in Christ we should “crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it we may grow up in our salvation.” Chapter 1 said we were born again by imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. Now the word of God is to be a necessary part of our spiritual diet. Make time to read, meditate and apply to your life what you learn in the Bible. Psalm 119:105, says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” |
