In our last visit we began a study of Jonah. After reading the Old Testament book of Jonah a few times I determined the focus of the book was: Jonah, Mobilized to Minister. With that focus in mind I meditated on the material some more. I thought the focus could be amplified and put into the following outline, using words from the poet Whittier as a catalyst: “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, it might have been.” Chapter 1 could be summarized with the words, “It might have been.” Chapter 2 could be identified as, “It might happen yet.” Chapter 3 would then fit under something like, “It really happened!” Then chapter 4 could be identified,“It happened, but!” It might have been, It might happen yet, It really happened, It happened, but! We need to remember, outlines are means or tools to help you remember. The points are hooks to hang additional information on. But always remember, to be meaningful, outlines must be based on facts and truth found in the portion you are studying. Outlines help you remember the truth discovered so you can apply the truth to your own life or be able to share the truth with others in a way easy for them to understand and remember. That’s what getting God’s message is about.
