In recent visits we’ve seen the two Emmaus disciples, described in Luke 24, move from disillusionment and despair to discovery and inexpressible delight as Jesus, “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets…explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” This took place while they were walking the 7 miles from Jerusalem to their home in Emmaus. It was already getting dark when they got to their home so they persuaded Jesus to be their guest. Over a meal Jesus opened their eyes so they could recognize Him, the risen Lord. They were so excited they immediately left their home and returned in the dark to Jerusalem to share the good news with the other disciples. When they got there they found out that Peter also had met the risen Lord. While they shared their experiences Jesus suddenly appeared to them and said, “Peace be with you.” To assuage their fear He showed them His hands and feet and asked for some food to eat. Then He said, “This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” After He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures He explained that His death and resurrection are the basis for proclaiming repentance and forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations. He assured them that the Father promised to anoint them with power so they could carry out their task. Understanding the Scriptures was foundational to their experiencing all of this after Jesus ascended into heaven.
