In our last few visits we’ve considered the power of body language as used by the master communicator, Jesus Christ. Probably the most explicit example of this communication skill is seen in John 13:1-17. Jesus was going to show them the full extent of His love. As they were being served the Passover Meal Jesus “got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel…After He finished washing their feet He put on His clothes and returned to his place.” He had their attention as He began to apply what He had demonstrated. He said, “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” Then He made the application of what He communicated through the body language of washing their feet. No one thought of doing this before the meal, as was the custom. If He as Teacher and Lord washed their feet they should be willing to wash each other’s feet. He pointed out that “no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things you will be blessed if you do them.” Humbly being a servant leader is not just washing people’s feet. Billy Sunday described it as “doing unto others what you would want them to do to you, only do it first!” Humility, initiative and selfless service is the lesson He vividly communicated to His disciples.
