We have been reflecting on an impact thought that emerged in my mind and considered some Biblical examples of men who lived it out. We found that God wants us to walk, work and worship with divine clarity and a growing relationship with Him, while we live in the midst of human ambiguity and ambivalence. As we were doing this study my mind kept going back to something stated in 1 Chronicles 12:32. While listing those who joined David when he was banished from the presence of Saul it mentions the men of Issachar and describes them as men “who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.” The situation David had been in was ambiguous and ambivalent. While Saul was king of Israel he was intent on killing David. David had been anointed by Samuel to succeed Saul. Now Saul was dead and David became king of Israel and conquered Jerusalem. Warriors from all the tribes rallied behind David. It was a time of change, with new challenges. Inequities had to be dealt with. Some were caught in the tensions of transition. There was a need for leaders who “understood the times and knew what Israel should do.” The men from Issachar fit the bill. I believe they were men who walked, worked and worshiped with divine clarity and had a growing relationship with God while living in the midst of human ambiguity and ambivalence. God knows we live in similar circumstances in our sin sick world – may God raise up leaders who understand the times and know what to do.
