In our last visit we began to look at the experience of Gideon described in Judges 6-8. Gideon was “threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites,” so he could provide food for himself and his family. The angel of the Lord watched and then appeared to him and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” It’s clear, Gideon didn’t take this word of affirmation seriously. He associated the Lord’s presence with victory and prosperity, not bondage and starvation. He had heard of great victories and prosperity in Israel’s past history, but in the midst of his present situation he felt the Lord had abandoned him and his people. Then to his amazement “The Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?’” You can almost hear him stutter out his response, “But Lord, how can I save Israel! My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” The Lord clinched His appeal with this answer, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.” Notice, the angel of the Lord’s appeal to Gideon started with, “The Lord is with you,” and it closes with, “I will be with you.” This is possibly where the saying came from, “One plus God is a majority.” When we go forth with the assurance of God’s presence we become “Mighty Warriors!” The strength we have in ourselves is not sufficient for the battles we face, but when we include the presence of God in the equation, success is assured, no matter what assignment God sends us on. Indeed, “One plus God is a winning majority!”
