As you read and reflect on Mark 6:30-56 it is clear Jesus wanted his disciples to get some rest for refreshment and refilling, spiritually and physically. Point three in the outline we established is this: Be prepared for obstacles - or recognize that it won’t be easy. In this passage it says the disciples left the crowd to go to a quiet place, but the crowd pursued them, even though they knew why they were going there. People can be very selfish and self-serving at the expense of others. After addressing this obstacle Jesus got the disciples away from the crowd, into a boat on a lake. Finally they were going to get that needed rest. But low and behold a storm blew up. They frantically tried rowing to shore, but to no avail. I don’t know why it is, but our best plans can be torpedoed by natural phenomena. I have had more than one vacation ruined by such events. My best plans for rest and refreshment ended in stress, frustration and more weariness. Often when God comes to our rescue we are so distracted by everything that we don’t recognize Him and fear it’s just one more intrusion. We need to realize, in the final analysis, there is only one sure antidote to burnout: The presence of Jesus. He knows your need. He can handle your need. He will handle your need if you cast it and yourself on Him. Remember his instruction to the disciples in verse 31, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” This impact statement is the best antidote to burnout.
