We are finding in our study of the fear of God in Proverbs that when you fear God your life will change in every area: intellectually, volitionally, emotionally and behaviorally. It will also change psychologically. Listen to Proverbs 19:23, “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” You could say that you experience life with a capital “L”. It’s not that you won’t encounter trouble in your life, but it won’t overwhelm you. You’ll be able to rest content in the knowledge that the one you worship and reverently follow will take care of you. Paul came to this place in his life. He wrote in Philippians 4:11, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” He had done what Jesus invites all of us to do in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Sometimes we feel that the fear of the Lord is more of an angst response to God. We should rather see it as described in Proverbs 14:26, “He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.” This is a picture of personal and family psychological rest.
