Today I would like to begin doing a topical study on what the book of Proverbs says about “the fear of God.” This phrase is mentioned 19 times in the book. In doing a topical study you first collect what is said about the topic. Make a list of each reference that includes the phrase “the fear of God,” and check the context in which it is found. Jot down what you find about the fear of the Lord in each reference. Then correlate what you find into an outline. In developing an outline find main points for the topic and then under each main point put supporting points. When you’ve done this you can then reflect on what you found about the topic and crystallize your understanding into some practical applications. After I collected the information in the book of Proverbs on “the fear of the Lord,” I started correlating the material into an outline. Here is what I came up with. For the title I determined the following: The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning and End of Wisdom. The key verse for this study would be Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” I then came up with three main points: 1. What happens when you choose not to fear the Lord? 2. How to cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord. 3. When you fear the Lord your life will change – you’ll be blessed. The next step in this study would be to list the references on the topic under the appropriate main point. We’ll do this in subsequent visits, but you can prepare by skimming through the book, noting the places where the phrase is found.
