Over the years of my Christian life there have been many verses from the Bible that were significant to me. Some were clear warnings for me regarding areas in my life that I had been careless about. Others were a comfort to me when facing uncertainties or disappointments. Then there were some God used to direct my life into His will and keep me on target. One of these verses became my life’s verse: 1 Corinthians 9:19, “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.” Let me share some thoughts that provide answers to the Who? What? Why? Where? When? And How? Questions. Paul obviously is talking about himself in this verse. He focuses on being a servant, or more accurately, a slave. In order to understand this better he puts being a slave by choice in juxtaposition to being free. He makes this choice so that many might be won to Christ. This commitment is to be evident everywhere and at all times. He describes how he does this in the verses that follow, but they merely expand on what is implicit in this verse. Not often does a verse in the Bible break down into three neat points like this verse does. 1. I am free from all men. 2. I choose to serve all. 3. I do this so that I might win more. The first point is an observation that is true for everyone. The second point is an expression of choice. The third point declares an expected outcome. I would like to amplify these three points more fully in subsequent visits. I hope you’ll join us in this study.
