In our last visit we touched on what is commonly known as the golden rule: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). Notice, when Jesus says, “in everything,” He means, “in everything.” Not just when you know others are watching. Or when they already have done something good to you. This doesn’t come in focus in your mind readily at times. What someone else is facing you might never have faced, so you need to ask yourself, “If this ever happened to me what would I want someone to do to help me?” According to what Paul wrote in 1st Corinthians 10:11, events recorded in the Old Testament “happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us.” In other words, the better you know God’s word as recorded in the Old Testament, the better you will be able to know what to do for others “in everything” they face. This principle is true for us, who in addition have the New Testament, which is filled with examples of what to do for others, especially when you consider the example of Jesus’ responses to those around Him. John put this succinctly in 1st John 2:6, “Whoever claims to live in him (that is, in Jesus) must walk as Jesus did.” Paul likewise challenges us in 1st Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” We have no excuse to disobey the golden rule of doing “to others what you would have them do to you.”
