We have been studying 2nd Peter 2 to discover the dangers associated with the influence of false teachers in the church. One of the things Peter talks about in this chapter is the destruction facing false teachers. While Peter is warning the faithful against the strategies of false teachers he is promising their ultimate destruction. They are losers and want to take others with them. At the same time he is possibly writing about them to warn them and call them to repentance. It is clear he doesn’t believe these false teachers are true believers. They might be familiar with the truth but their hearts are not changed. They are like dogs who return to their vomit or pigs that return to their muddy pig pens after being washed on the outside. If they don’t repent, because they have been exposed to the truth, their end will be worse than if they had not been exposed. Peter says condemnation hangs over them. As they have harmed others they will be harmed. They are accursed to the blackest darkness. To make his point he refers to the fate of the angels who rebelled and are kept in hell, gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment. Also, he reminds them of the flood which destroyed the world, with only Noah and seven others saved from the destruction. And then there was Sodom and Gomorrah, left in ashes and made an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly. If they are intent on pursuing a life that will lead to swift destruction, don’t follow them. Beware of their subtle influence. Stay true to God!
