In our last visit we considered the beginning of a bigger context for what is recorded in Acts 20:17-21:1. We saw how Paul got to know Aquilla and Priscilla in Corinth working with them in their tent-making business. Possibly they came to trust in Jesus through Paul’s witness. They joined Paul and the rest of his team in planting a church there. After a couple of years they traveled to Ephesus where presumably they set up a ten-making business. Paul left them there as seasoned lay people who could relate to any who were interested in pursuing Christianity. Paul spoke to those in the synagogue and stirred up interest, but left within a couple of weeks to report to his sending churches in Jerusalem and Antioch. Probably within a year, after meeting with congregations in Galatia and Phrygia, Paul returned to Ephesus. During his absence Apollos, a man from Alexandria, came to Ephesus and fervently shared what he knew about God’s Word and Jesus. Aquilla and Priscilla detected that he didn’t fully understand the Gospel, so “they invited him to their hoe and explained to him the way of God more adequately” (Acts 18:26). Paul arrived right after Apollos left for Corinth. There were many who were prepared for Paul to take them under his wing to teach and mentor them. For almost 3 years he led the growth of the church in Ephesus. The impact of this church was felt throughout Ephesus and the whole province of Asia.
