In our last visit I emphasized the importance of parents, especially fathers, making time to affirm and give their blessing over their children. It would be best to do this for each child individually, affirming them for who they are, and expressing your confidence for God to bless them. Many never had their parent’s blessing spoken personally over them. One such person in the Bible is Jabez. 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 says: “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.” The name his mother gave him sounds like the Hebrew word for “pain.” His name had a crippling effect on him, so much so he was driven to cry out to God for His blessing upon his life. If you compare his prayer with the priestly blessing we considered in our last visit you can see the similarity. In essence Jabez was crying out for God to do what his parents hadn’t given him. He wanted God’s blessing promised in the priestly blessing he heard every time he went to the temple. He was not disappointed. God granted his request, declaring he was more honorable than his brothers. If you’ve never been blessed by your parents or anyone else don’t despair. Seek God to bless you. Like Jabez, you won’t be disappointed.
