We’ve been studying what the Bible says about being a responsible parent. We’ve considered how parents can buy up teachable moments. This can happen in a structured setting or in a spontaneous way. Sometimes parents need to interfere in the lives of their children, but when they do, it would be wise to ask questions before disciplining them. In addition, I believe it’s important for parents to encourage a “can-do” attitude. As Christians we should believe what Paul stated in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” This “can-do” confidence, however, needs to be understood as operating within the parameters of God’s will. God won’t strengthen us to do what is contrary to His will. When He strengthens us to accomplish something it is natural for us to give Him the glory. When we do something in our own strength, we tend to want the glory. There are times we might set out to do something God calls us to do as Christians, but we do it in our own strength. The outcome might appear successful, but if God’s not in it the true outcome will not further God’s kingdom nor bring Him glory. And that, in reality, would be a failure. Having given this caution I want to reaffirm the Biblical point I started with, we should model and help others develop a “can-do” attitude. This is the faith walk all of us as Christians are called to. As parents we should always be asking ourselves, are we modeling what we are calling and training our children to become?
