Responsible parenting involves providing a healthy environment and security by cultivating a healthy marriage. Parents should model the kind of life they’d like their children to emulate. The impact will be enhanced if the children see their parents helping each other become good models. Even with all of this going for you it will be important to add to this, prayer for your children. Prayer is especially important if you’re in a dysfunctional marriage or as a single parent. We need to cry out for God’s involvement in our children’s lives. James 4:2 says, “You do not have, because you do not ask God.” What should you pray for? One prayer I always encourage is to ask God to give your children good friends. Then, that your child or children come to experience a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by faith. John 1:12-13 makes it clear you do not become a Christian by being born into a Christian family: “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” It’s a God thing. That’s why it’s important to pray for them. Pray for them before they’re born. Pray for them when they’re babes resting in your arms. Pray for them when they’re beginning to understand and communicate. Pray for them as you teach them the truth. Pray for them after they respond to the truth.. And especially pray if they rebel and resist the truth. This should be your life long commitment for your children.
