We’ve spent some time now reflecting on the impact phrase found repeatedly in Mark 15, “The King of the Jews,” referring to Jesus. We saw that some derided Jesus for claiming to be the king of the Jews. Others, though few, worshipped Him and by faith committed themselves to Him, acknowledging Him as their King. The vast majority who witnessed His trial and crucifixion were fickle in their devotion, and at the crucial moment of His judgment consented to His death. The late, A.W. Tozer, likened Jesus Christ’s present position in the church “to that of a king in a limited, constitutional monarchy.” That is, He is celebrated as the king, but without any real power to act. His influence is felt, but only in a limited way. The real power rests in the constitutional government, representing the mind and will of the people. The king in a limited, constitutional monarchy can express his preference, but it will only make a difference if the people respond and decide to implement what he desires. I believe Tozer was right in his assessment. All of the denominations emphasize their own preferences, and so do independent churches, para-church organizations and movements. There is often verbal assent to what they hold in common, but our different preferences muddy and fog up the clear declaration that Jesus is not only king of the Jews, but King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It is high time for believers to unite in humbling ourselves and initiating a change by acclaiming Him our undisputed and absolute King and ourselves His loyal subjects and servants.
