It’s been interesting to see how the phrase, “the king of the Jews,” in Mark 15, helps you understand what was taking place and to learn truth that can help you make wise decisions. In fact, as you reflect on the latter part of this chapter you find the centurion who was present at Christ’s crucifixion declare, “Surely this man was the Son of God.” A number of women mentioned in verses 40-41, though timidly watching from a distance, were nevertheless identified as followers of Jesus who had cared for His needs. Though their faith was severely tested by the events described in this chapter they still chose to be there in His presence. You also have Joseph of Arimathea going to Pilate and asking for the body of Jesus so he could give Him a proper burial. It’s fascinating to read that Pilate was surprised when told Jesus had already died, so he called in the centurion to verify it. He confirmed it and Joseph was given permission to bury the body of Jesus. You have a believing soldier, verifying the death so that a believing member of the council could give the body a proper burial, and believing women witnessing all of these events. All the while, the other soldiers, Pilate, the religious leaders and most of the crowd refused to give further consideration to what was taking place. Unwittingly they were players in the most unjust trial and judgment in human history. In the most tragic events God knows how to keep believers, bring them together for mutual encouragement and use them to accomplish His purpose. Who do you choose to be identified with?
