In our study of Mark 15 we’ve seen that the phrase, “the king of the Jews,” helps us get God’s message in this chapter. Jesus affirmed the statement was true of Him. Pilate questioned it’s truth, but his questioning is seen as merely posturing to find a way out of a tight spot. When he had reason to stand against what was wrong he chose not to and compromised the truth to save his misguided reputation. The religious leaders on the other hand antagonistically accused Jesus of claiming to be king of the Jews. They literally attacked Him and anyone who would stand for Him. They were envious and wanted Him removed so they would not be threatened by Him. When they finally got their way and saw Jesus hanging on the cross, they mockingly reassured themselves by saying to each other, “He saved others, but he can’t save himself! Let this Christ, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” They weren’t interested in believing, even though they were familiar with the truth. They knew about Christ, the Messiah. They knew about the King of the Jews. But when faced with Him they became envious, falsely accused Him, pushed to have Him crucified and mocked Him. They did this in the face of overwhelming evidence that He indeed was who He claimed to be. Never, Never follow their example. Even when you feel like moving away from and against the truth, before it is too late, humbly bow, confess your sin and rebellion, and genuinely come to Jesus by faith. You will never regret doing this.
