In Mark 9 we read about the privilege Peter, James and John experienced when they witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus. But they were confused about what Jesus meant when He told them He would rise from the dead. Jesus explained again His mission which would include His death and resurrection. Before they could go further in the conversation while they descended the mountain, they encountered another experience on the mountain side. They met the other disciples who when asked for help by the father of a demon possessed boy had been unable to deliver him. As Jesus learned about what had transpired during His absence He was frustrated with their lack of faith. Then, while the boy was in agony on the ground Jesus asked the father of the boy some questions about his condition. Finally, the father in desperation said, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “If you can?” Jesus said. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” The father blurted out, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” His faith wasn’t very strong, but his petition was honest and specific. Jesus responded by miraculously delivering the boy. It’s never a question of “If Jesus can.” The limiting factor is our peaked faith. When the disciples later asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” Jesus replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” Some translations read, “by prayer and fasting.” The disciples probably had tried using various prayers they had learned. They had not yet learned to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit. It was the desperate prayer of the father Jesus answered. He had more work to do in preparing the disciples for their mission.
