Do you at times desire to have God show you a sign to prove that He is? You’re not alone. In Jesus day, after He performed many signs and wonders, there were those who asked for a sign from heaven. Such an experience is described in Mark 8:11-13. Some think Jesus is so loving and desirous of having people trust in Him that He would gladly give them a sign. But it says, Jesus sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.” Then He left them. At first glance it seems Jesus didn’t care. But remember, Jesus already had done many miraculous signs. These folk just wanted to be entertained, or worse, have Him do something they would be able to criticize. Let me ask you something. Would you want Jesus to show you a sign to confirm who He is? Are you not convinced from what you’ve read in the Bible that He is who He claims to be? Do you think seeing a sign would convince you? Remember all those during Jesus’ earthly ministry who saw miraculous signs and still rejected Him. They even participated in the events leading to His crucifixion. If He doesn’t give you a miraculous sign will you turn away from Him? Why? Does He owe that to you? Are you trying to get Him to jump through your religious expectation hoops? Will you come to Him only on your own terms? If these attitudes characterize your life, don’t be surprised if you get a response similar to the Pharisees in Mark 8:12, “No sign will be given,” and Jesus walks away. He loves you and will meet your need on His terms only, not yours.
