In recent visits we’ve observed what Jesus did and taught as recorded in the Gospel of Mark. It seems the disciples should have had their confidence built up by this point. But as we read in Mark 8 it appears they still had some growing to do. Jesus taught a large crowd for three days and He was concerned about sending them home hungry. He didn’t want them to collapse on their journey. The disciples wondered where they could get enough food to feed them. They had seen Jesus feed five thousand by multiplying five loaves and a few fish. This crowd was about four thousand men, plus women and children. Jesus asked the disciples, “How many loaves do we have?” “Seven,” they answered. Jesus then told the crowd to sit down on the ground, setting the stage for another miracle. But notice what Jesus did next, “When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people and they did so. They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.” Jesus didn’t ask for a miracle to multiply the seven loaves and the few small fish. He gave thanks for what they had. His expectation was that God could and would use what they had to meet the need they were facing. Too often we assess what we think we’ll need and ask God to supply. If He doesn’t provide we presume we can’t meet the need. Jesus modeled a better response. Put as an impact thought: Thank God for what you have. Use it to start meeting the need before you, trusting God to do what ultimately would glorify Him.
