At the close of our last visit I asked what lessons we can learn from the experience of the Israelites in the cities of Marah and Elim described in Exodus 15:22-27.

Remember, their experience in these cities followed their great deliverance from the attacking Egyptian army by the miracle of crossing the Red Sea. Just three days later they grumbled when the water at Marah turned out to be bitter. They apparently didn’t know that just ahead of them was Elim where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees – an oasis in the middle of the desert!

Had they trusted God to provide for them as He guided them, they would have found plenty of good water and even some palm trees for shade. Living by faith often requires patience as we wait for God to provide what is needed along the way. Remember, Where God guides He provides!

If we grumble in times of testing we might very well experience some negative consequences, like uncomfortable conditions or even illnesses. God waits to restore us. Remember, He is Jehovah-Rapha, our Healer. But we might not need His healing power if we patiently follow His leading until He provides.

They were in a desert and needed water. Just ahead of Marah, where they grumbled about the bitter water, there was Elim, where there was plenty of fresh, drinkable water to quench their thirst. In addition, there were palm trees to provide shade!

Yes, God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20). Trust in Him as you patiently obey Him, and keep on giving Him the glory for all He provides.
