Some years ago I included in one of my books a section on some of the names of God.  I would like to share this material over the next few days.  I’m confident it will be both comforting and encouraging to know afresh something of what God has revealed about Himself in His Word.

Proverbs 9:10 declares, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Dr. Henry Thiessen, in his Lectures in Systematic Theology, wrote: “One of the most widely used terms for Deity in ancient times is El, with its derivations, Elim, Elohim, and Eloah.  But like the Greek "theos," the Latin "Deus," and the English "God," it is a generic name, including every
other member of the class deity.  It expresses majesty and authority, although the meaning of the rood El is lost in obscurity.  Gesenius rook it to be a part of the verb to be strong, and so the Strong One; Noeldeke connected it with the Arabic root for to be in front, and so the Governor or Leader; Dillman traced it to a root with the sense of power or might; Legarde sougbht its explanation in a root which made it mean the goal.

The plural Elohim is used regularly by the Old Testament writers with singular verbs and adjectives to denote a singular idea.”  This plural name for God is used in Genesis 1:1,
suggesting the first reference to the trinity found in the Bible.  It was the Triune God who spoke the world and the heavens into existence.

Take some time to worship the Triune God Elohim, understood as the
Strong One, Governor or Leader, The Powerful One.
