We’ve studied Ephesians 5:1-6:4 and done a focus and amplify study of these verses. In our study I noticed that the term “children” is mentioned 4 times in these verses. It also mentions the time when children leave father and mother and get married. Two times the term children refers to being children of God in the church, and twice to being children of parents in the family.

When a person trusts in Jesus Christ for salvation he becomes a child of God, one who is dearly loved by God. As a child of God we are transformed from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. We become children of light and are to let our light shine in the darkness of our world for the glory of God and the benefit of others.

As children of parents we are to obey our parents and honor them by the way we live. We are to be receptive and responsive to their training and teaching in the things of God. These four desirable characteristics of children are basic for preparing ourselves for marriage where we leave parents and cleave to our spouse.

Contemplate what it means to be a child dearly loved by God, a child of light, a child who obeys and honors his parents, and a child who is moldable. No better preparation can be found anywhere for becoming a healthy spouse to someone in marriage.

Neglecting any of these elements in your life will have a debilitating effect on your marriage and your family life. And it will hinder the effectiveness of anything you attempt to do for God.
