We referred in our study of 1 Samuel 25 to Ephesians 4:26, “‘In your anger do not sin.’ Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Paul adds in verse 27, “do not give the devil a foothold.”

Anger opens the door for you to be tempted to do something you would not do otherwise. If you don’t stop long enough to reflect on what God has said or to seek wise counsel you are giving the devil a foothold. That’s why Paul wrote, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

The particular details of a temptation you face might be different, but the experience in David’s life vividly illustrates this. Something said or done to us tempts us to respond impulsively and often excessively. If we don’t seek counsel we will likely overreact and initiate a response of repaying evil with evil.

David was already responding with unjust intentions when God made a way out of his temptation through Abigail’s appeal and counsel. God likewise will often provide someone to help us see the foolishness and error of acquiescing to a temptation. We need to recognize such a provision and praise God for it. Then thank whoever helped us see the way of escape.

Often when tempted we know what to do, but allow what we want to do to get the best of us. When tempted don’t give the devil a foothold. Look for God’s provision of a way of escape, and take it.
