In our study of the Disciple’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 we have seen that Jesus encourages us to begin our prayers with worship. This will spill over into our requests, specifically, that God’s kingdom might come and His “will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Once this begins to happen in our lives in answer to our prayers it is fitting to move on to praying about specific issues we face in daily life.

Jesus teaches us, we should pray for God to “Give us today our daily bread.” We are human. God created us so that we need regular sustenance. Under normal circumstances we need a daily diet to maintain our health and strength. Bread is a basic source for nourishment throughout the world. It might also be representative of a daily balanced diet.

Then, there is the possibility that it also represents the need we have for daily spiritual food. After Jesus talked to the Samaritan woman at the well as recorded in John 4 the disciples came to Him and said, “Rabbi, eat something.” He said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about…My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” His fellowship with His Father was His spiritual nourishment.

As His own heart was enriched through this fellowship it spilled over and began to provide nourishment for those around Him. In John 6:35 He applies this truth to His disciples: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Have you come to Him for nourishment today?
