We’ve been studying Solomon’s dedicatory prayer found in 2 Chronicles 6:14-42. After building his case for asking God to come and dwell in the temple he had built for Him, he had to acknowledge that he and the people of God were prone to sin and wander from God.

In his prayer he elaborates a number of ways in which men will likely sin: “When a man wrongs his neighbor…when your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you…when the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you…when famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when enemies besiege them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come…when they sin against you…and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to a land far away or near.”

When these and any other sins are committed and they recognize the error of their way and are broken before God under the consequences that ensue, if they repent, turn toward the temple where God dwells and pray, Solomon pleads for God to hear their cry, forgive their sins and restore His blessing.

Likewise, if a “foreigner who does not belong to…Israel but has come from a distant land because of God’s great name and mighty hand and outstretched arm…(and) When God’s people go to war against their enemies, wherever God sends them,” if they pray toward the temple, Solomon pleads that God will hear and bless them. Solomon wants all to know, God is near and accessible.
