While reading Psalm 42 and 43, I noticed one verse was repeated 3 times. When I find this in my Bible reading I usually stop and ask, why is it repeated?

Here it is, “Why are you downcast, oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my savior and my God.”

Look at the context of these two psalms. They start out with a deep desire, “As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, Oh God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet God?”

Reading on, the Psalmist points out that he was frustrated in this pursuit. He really wanted to meet God and get to know Him better. But God doesn’t seem to be coming through for him. In fact his enemies ask, “Where is your God?” This is repeated two times in these chapters. I believe the statement I quoted earlier is his way of coping when he is downcast and disturbed.

If you’re feeling that way today, maybe this will be of help to you. Do some self talk as the psalmist did: “Why are you downcast, oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God.” In other words, he’s challenging himself—just put your hope in God. Don’t be downcast, don’t be disturbed. Put your hope in God. Praise your Savior and God.

God doesn’t change even though your circumstances do. Praise Him. He’s your Savior and God. He’s the one who brought you into relationship with Himself when you trusted in Him.

You will find, in answer to his question in verse 2, “When can I go and meet with God?” The answer is anytime.
