Let’s look again at the second point in our outline of the book of Habakkuk: Authentic prayers to God.

Growing out of his authentic personal relationship with God the prophet prays to God in what some might consider a crass approach. He complains to God about the compromised, evil conditions among the people of God. He reminds God that he has cried out to Him about these conditions and complains that God has not responded to his cries for help. It’s almost like he is trying to inform God about how bad things really are, as though God was not concerned or worse yet, that He tolerates evil.

In an authentic relationship with God our prayers can express our inner feelings honestly. God knows what we are feeling and thinking. He even understands our impatience.

What we often are unaware of is that God is already working on the answer. But He is never in a hurry to satisfy our impatient demands. So share what’s on your heart honestly, but always be ready to listen. What you hear might not be what you expected. It might not fit your theology.

The prophet responded to God’s answer with, first, an affirmation of his own understanding of who God is and the assurance that He would not wipe out His people.

Second, he expressed that he heard accurately that God would judge and punish His people, but the means God chose to do this confused him. He expressed his confusion by again affirming what he knew to be true about God, that He couldn’t look on sin nor tolerate wrong.

God can handle such complaints, and in His time will answer them.
