In our last few visits we have looked at 1 Corinthians 2 and focused on verse 9: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.”

I shared how when I first read this verse I immediately thought Paul was referring to what God has prepared in heaven for those who come to Him for salvation. I then discovered that what God prepared He has revealed by His Spirit to those who love Him (verse 10).   He was referring to things we can know and experience now, here on earth.

Then I remembered Paul was writing to a church, a group of people who had come to love God, but who had waned in their love for God. This was evidenced by the dysfunctional way they were relating to one another and the world around them.

So this message was first for those who had not yet come to Jesus Christ. Until they believed, what Paul was talking about, would be foolishness to them. Then, it was a letter written to worldly Christians who needed to repent and return to their first love. In addition, it was written to some who were walking with God, trusting in Jesus Christ, who needed to keep on growing in grace and in their knowledge of Jesus Christ. He wanted them to experience all God has prepared for them.

In one sense Paul’s basic message had not changed. As was true before they believed, they needed to know Jesus and Him crucified. This is the message of forgiveness. Accepting it by faith saves people. It also restores those who have drifted and enriches those walking with God.
