In our last visit we saw how Hezekiah’s life was extended 15 years in answer to his prayer. On the surface this sound’s like a great victory. But you might change your mind when you read in Isaiah 39 what happened during those 15 years. You might even conclude what the Psalmist had in mind when he wrote, “The Lord granted their request but sent leanness to their souls.”

Let me explain. I mentioned how the son of the king of Babylon had sent a letter and gift to Hezekiah when he heard of his illness and recovery. Hezekiah welcomed those who brought the letter and gift. In fact he took them on a tour of his palace, showing off all of his national treasures.

When Isaiah found out about these visitors and all Hezekiah had shown them he delivered this message from the Lord Almighty: “The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

Why such a dire prediction? Could it be that Hezekiah became proud of all he had accomplished? Remember, in his prayer for healing he recounted all he had done in living for God. When God granted his request, did he get arrogant and proud about his accomplishments and God’s apparent approval?

I believe he’s an example of pride going before a fall. He for sure didn’t finish well during those 15 years added to his life.
