I was intrigued by Isaiah’s words in chapter 33:14-17: “‘Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?’ He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil – this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him. Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.”

These words were given as a challenge and encouragement in the face of impending danger and trauma. The Assyrian army was devastating city after city, nation after nation, and they were heading toward Judah and Jerusalem. From a pure human perspective there was no escape possible. All options were nullified in the face of the approaching danger.

Isaiah had told the people of God that they deserved what was coming upon them. But while announcing this impending judgment he included hope for those who walk righteously, speak what is right and don’t participate in extortion or bribes.

If they don’t listen to plots of murder or contemplate any evil actions they can rest assured that God will protect, provide and preserve them. In addition they will see the king in his beauty.

This is the ultimate answer to the questions at the start of this portion, “Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”
