In the upper room session described in John 13 – 16 Jesus taught the disciples their need to recognize their utter dependence on the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

He promised that after He left them He and God the Father would send them another comforter/counselor who would be with them for the rest of their lives. This one, the Holy Spirit, would be to them just what Jesus was to them, only more, in that He would always be with them even when each of them went their separate way. They personally would never be without the presence of God with them. Jesus promised in John 14:18, “I will not leave you as orphans!”

The Holy Spirit also would teach them all things and remind them of everything Jesus had said to them (John 14:26). He also promised them that the Holy Spirit would “testify about me.” He went on to say, “And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning” (John 15:26-27).

To amplify this point Jesus promised in John 16:7-11, “Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.” They would not have to convict or convince their audience about their need of the Savior, the Holy Spirit would do that through them.

Finally Jesus promised in John 16:13-14: “When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth…and tell you what is yet to come.” As the Holy Spirit does all this “He will bring glory to me.”

What a glorious provision Jesus promised them and us. Don’t miss it!
