In our last visit we started amplifying the focus of Isaiah 55. If you want to experience God’s mercy and pardon you must first come to God and receive the provisions God has freely provided.

Listen to the beginning of God’s invitation in Isaiah 55:1-3, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost…come to me.”

The picture of those to whom the invitation is given is that they are thirsty, hungry and bankrupt. In one sense this invitation seems to be an oxymoron. How can you come and buy what you need if you don’t have money? It doesn’t make sense unless you know the one who is extending the invitation.

God is basically saying, I know you are bankrupt and hurting from thirst and hunger. I know what you really need. I know what will truly satisfy. Come to me. Pull out your empty pockets and open your empty wallets and acknowledge that you could never buy what you need with what you have.

Once you acknowledge your bankruptcy you have taken the first step to finding and experiencing God’s mercy and pardon. The next step, once you have come into God’s presence, is to “Listen, listen to me,” God says,” and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David” (Isaiah 55:2-3).

Pray and reflect on this second point in preparation for our next visit.
