One of the greatest chapters in the Old Testament is Isaiah 53. Isaiah presents such a vivid picture of the passion of Jesus Christ that it appears to be an historical account. In reality it is prophetic, penned about 700 years before it took place.

I’d like to do a study of this chapter using the devotional study approach. To do this read the chapter a number of times and then answer the following questions:

1. What does this portion teach about God the Father…Son…Holy Spirit?
2. What does it teach about man?
3. Are there any warnings to heed?
4. Are there any commands to obey?
5. Are there any promises to claim by faith?

The picture you get of God the Father, referred to in this chapter as the Lord and God, is of one who caries out His will: “the will of the Lord will prosper in his (that is Christ’s) hand” (verse 10):   That will is primarily seen in “the Lord making his (Christ’s) life a guilt offering.” This is further described in verse 3. The prophet Isaiah says “considered him (Christ) stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.” And in verse 6, “the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

It was God the Father’s will for Christ to bear our sins as a guilt offering on the cross, suffer and die there. The Father placed the iniquity of the whole world on Christ. This is seen as being stricken or smitten by God and afflicted.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin, or a sin offering, for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” The first half of the verse was God’s will for Christ. The second half of the verse is for you. Have you accepted it by faith?
