When Jesus knew that His time had come He was ready for the moment. He was ready intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It says in John 13:1, “He knew that the time had come.” That is He knew experientially. He knew the dynamics that were in place and He had a sense that this was a “kairos” moment, that is, a particular, unique moment in time.

That moment, however, was bittersweet. It began with Christ exemplifying servant leadership by washing the disciple’s feet. This was followed by His disclosure that one of them would betray Him. If you read this portion carefully it’s clear that Jesus was very much in control.

After releasing Judas to do his dastardly deed he presented the disciples with the priorities and promises of His kingdom. He helped them, especially Peter, realize their vulnerability. Then He challenged them to live with love, obedience, dependence upon the Holy Spirit and a spirit of hope and peace.

I found it interesting to note that in John 16:1-4 Jesus said to His disciples, “All this I have told you so that you will not go astray…I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.”

While He was with them they could ask Him what to do or what He meant. Now He was preparing them for when He would leave them. They needed to have some specific information so that when they were faced with circumstances and decisions they would be able to make the most of their unique “kairos” moments.
